The BMW K100RT Cafe racer is a great looking car with an interesting history. Designed in Germany in 1966, this model was made to compete against the Honda Jazz in the small to mid-sized cafe racer segment. Built by BMW's Car Design department, the design was meant to be aggressive in nature and to match the styling of the company's other products. The result was a well balanced and attractive car that managed to combine looks with functionality and performance.
The car was initially built by BMW's Car Design department for the company's own customers only. As such, it had all the features found on other BMW cars except for one: the engine. In order to build the BMW K100RT cafe racer, the car had to be modified to meet BMW specifications. This meant that the car was made more powerful and larger to handle better on the road than its American cousin. It was then shipped over to South Africa to be fitted with BMW's own engine and to compete against other BMW's cars in the South African market.
BMW did not build the BMW K100RT with any intention of it being used for commercial purposes. Instead, it was built solely for private racing. A small group of customers managed to get their hands on the car for personal use but when they decided to move on from using it as a private purchase, they returned the car to BMW and requested that the engine and transmission are removed. BMW was kind enough to allow them to sell the car.
With BMW's help, the owner of the car managed to get it back in shape and was able to make it the prize of the event. The car was then entered into the BMW International Car Competition for the first time.
Although the car was never designed to take the place of the BMW K1, it proved to be a good competitor and was even able to win the race, becoming the first BMW K100RT cafe racer to win a race. Since then, many more have won this same race, proving that the BMW K100RT is not just another small to medium-sized car with an interesting story.
Today, this particular BMW K100RT cafe racer is still one of the most popular models to be bought by collectors, particularly those interested in driving an exotic car. The car is extremely popular for its ability to handle well in wet conditions while remaining quite stable and being able to corner at high speeds.
